Sewing, or better worded, weaving your own fishing nets can be done over the course of several days as an ongoing project. You will need adequate space in your workshop or sewing room to complete this project, since setting up the weaving area/loom requires a large area. The process is very repetitive and should be done over several days to ensure quality on the net and that boredom is fended off. Once completed, you can fish with pride using your own creation.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Scissors
- Utility knife
- 8 to 10 fishing floats
- 500 feet of 2mm nylon twine or cord
- 30 feet of 5mm nylon cord
- 2 eye hooks
- 2 net shuttles
- Split sinkers
- 2 dowels, 5 foot long by 3/4 inch
- C-clamps or 2 bench vises
- Lighter
Step 1
Fix both dowels into bench vises or C-clamps so they stand straight up. At the top end of each dowel, screw in an eye hook. Cut away the length of the 5mm cord, determined by how long and big you want your net.
Thread all of your fishing floats through the 5mm cord and then tie the ends of the cord to the eye hooks using a Uni knot. You will have a length of cord running between the two dowels.
Step 2
Measure out 40 to 60 pieces of the 2mm cord that is 1.5 inches in length out of the 2mm cord. Beginning in the upper left-hand corner of the dowels, and at the left-hand corner of the 5mm cord, begin tying the 2mm cut sections to the 5mm cord with Lark’s Head knots. Continue along the full length of the 5mm cord.
Step 3
Measure and cut out lengths of the 2mm cord equal in length to the 5mm cord. At the bottom of the small 2mm lines knotted with the Larks Head, tie the length of the 2mm cord to the loose ends of the 2mm Larks Head cord. Continue this process every four inches until you reach the bottom of the net and bottom of the dowel.
Step 4
Cut another length of the 5mm cord in the same length as the top length of the 5mm cord. When you reach the bottom, tie the loose ends of the 2mm cords to the 5mm cord using Larks Head knots. Attach split sinkers along the bottom edge of the net on the 5mm cord.
Step 5
Melt down the exposed and cut ends of the 5mm and 2mm cords on the ends and edges. Do not let them burn, just melt the nylon ends together so they do not fray during use. Remove the net from the eye screws and remove the dowels from the vises or C-clamps.
