How to Make Worm Molds for Fishing

If you are thinking about making your own plastic fishing worms, you can also make the mold for them. Making a plastic worm mold is not that difficult, and the supplies are not expensive, either. Before you know it, you will have a production line of homemade plastic worms and your fishing buddies will be envious.

    Difficulty: Moderate

    Things You’ll Need:

    • Newspaper Flat plastic container Epoxy Plastic fishing worm Petroleum jelly Plaster of Paris Bondo Q-tip
    • Newspaper
    • Flat plastic container
    • Epoxy
    • Plastic fishing worm
    • Petroleum jelly
    • Plaster of Paris
    • Bondo
    • Q-tip

    Instructions

    Step 1

Place newspaper on the surface where you will be making the mold. This will catch any mess you might make while making the worm mold.

    Step 2

Select a flat, plastic container to make the mold into. You will need a container that is approximately 2 inches high and 3 inches longer than your plastic fishing worm on each side.

    Step 3

Place a light coat of epoxy to the underside of your plastic fishing worm. Stick the worm onto the center bottom of the plastic container. You can use several worms by spacing them evenly apart.

    Step 4

Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly on the inside of the plastic container. Be sure to cover the bottom and all sides. This will make removing the mold from the plastic container easier.

    Step 5

Mix the Bondo or Plaster of Paris per the instruction on the package. Pour the mixture over the plastic worm. You want the mixture to be approximately an inch thick inside the container. Allow the mixture to completely dry.

    Step 6

Remove the mold from the plastic container once it is dry. Remove your worms from the mold. There should now be a form of the worm on the Bondo or Plaster of Paris.

    Step 7

Place some epoxy on a Q-tip and coat each cavity with a light amount. This makes your fishing worms look shiny. By leaving the epoxy off, your worms will be fine for use but they will just look duller. Your mold is now ready to use.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You can also use RTV silicone to make your worm mold out of, but it is more expensive than Bondo or Plaster of Paris. You can use this same mold-making technique to make copies of any of your plastic fishing lures.
