How to Make Your Own Kayak Rudder

Kayaking can be one of nature’s most relaxing sports. Installing your own rudder can give you more control over your kayak and allow you to sail on rougher waters for longer distances.

With a few simple steps, you can take a plain piece of plywood and turn it into a beautiful and unique rudder for your kayak.

    Difficulty: Moderate

    Things You’ll Need:

    • Plywood
    • Jigsaw
    • Sander
    • Drill
    • Fiberglass
    • Paint brush

    Step 1

Design your rudder pattern. You can make your pattern simple or more detailed if you want a challenge. You will need at least a 5-inch rudder for many recreational kayaks.

    Step 2

Use a one-quarter-inch sheet of plywood to draw your pattern. Be sure to use a flat and sturdy surface. This will help you make clean and clear lines as a guide when cutting.

    Step 3

Use a jigsaw to cut your pattern. Be sure to go slowly and take your time. Once you have your pattern, begin sanding the plywood. Continue sanding until the front and rear edges are extremely sharp. Then round each side of the front and rear smooth with a sander.

    Step 4.

Put the plywood into a vise to hold it securely.

    Step 5

Combine the resin and hardener. You can do this in any container, especially one that can be thrown away.

    Step 6

Cut pieces of fiberglass so the outside of your plywood can be completely covered.

    Step 7

Place the fiberglass on top of your plywood. Be sure to take your time and line it up carefully. Begin brushing the resin on the fiberglass to make it adhere to the plywood. Allow it to dry completely before moving on. Once it is completely dry, take the rudder out of the vise. Put it back into the vise on the opposite side, so you can finish the rest of the rudder.

    Step 8

Once the rudder dries completely, sand and paint it in a color and pattern of your choosing.
